Unclog your toilet the smart way

Clogged toilets are a common problem in many households and you probably dealt with this several times yourself. Just imagine having to clean and plunge your toilet because it just happened to clog itself minutes before your dinner party.

Fortunately, you can resolve this problem yourself in a speedy manner, without having to wait for the plumber and pull some money out of your wallet.

If you flushed the toilet and realized  the water had not gone down, don’t insist and flush it again a second time because the water in the bowl might just overflow all over your bathroom floor. Instead you should try pouring some warm water from a bucket. It doesn’t have to be hot boiling water as that might damage your porcelain but some warm water might raise the temperature of the water in the bowl enough for the clog to soften.

If after a few minutes, you realized that didn’t have any effect, you will probably have to plunge your way to freedom. First of all, don’t forget to take some cautions so that you won’t flood the whole place. Now, you don’t have to shut off the water supply for the entire household, but it would be a good idea to make sure the water supply to the toilet is off so you can prevent the bathroom floor from flooding. Also, just in case, you might want to cover the floor with some newspapers or such , because things can go messy. Splashes and spills are imminent when your dealing with a clogged toilet and it will be much easier to clean the place if you just cover it up first with a bunch of old newspapers or towels.

Don’t forget that the toilet is a very insanitary place and it’s a very good idea to put on a pair of rubber gloves to protect you from those pesky germs and also if you know you have a very developed sense of smell, maybe you should ensure that the bathroom has good air circulation so you won’t get nausea.

Before you start plunging like there’s no tomorrow make sure you have the right tool for the job. A cheap suction-cup type of plunger might not be good enough since these are mainly designed for straight flat surfaces, the kind you will find in sinks or bathtubs

Toilets however have a bowl shape and cup plungers don\'t work because they lose their seal when you pull up. Instead, go get yourself a large heavy-duty rubber plunger, either the ball-shaped type or one with a fold-out rubber flange on the bottom which forms a seal. Remember, the larger the plunger, the more force you can apply down into the clogged drain. The plunger should have a shape which ensures that the water you force out of it when you push down does not shoot back up into the toilet bowl instead of pushing into the drain.

When you plunge remember to cover the whole completely and that you should push and pull water, not air. If it is necessary add some more water into the bowl. When you insert the plunger into the bowl press down firmly but slowly so you won’t splash yourself. The suction and the pressure from the pulling and pushing will gradually loosen the clog and clear the drain just in the time for you to greet your guests.
